The currently ongoing flooding of Lubstów open-pit - view on the reservoir in 2018 [www.kwbkonin.pl]

As a part of one of the tasks of the RAFF project, scientists evaluated geological, hydrogeological and hydrochemical conditions in Lubstów Lake area - one of the final pits in Konin Basin (Poland) and in Maczki Bór open-pit area (Poland), as well as in the areas of three large artificial lakes in Northern Bohemia (Czechia). Moreover, scientists studied in detail the process of Lubstów final pit flooding which differ significantly from the study assumptions preceding the reclamation of the liquidated open-pit. Furthermore, the project team proposed a multicriteria classification of flooded open-pits, according to hydrogeological conditions.

Subsequently, hydrogeological models for the selected sites are to be developed. Models will contain hydrodynamic and water quality models.

On 6 and 7 October, a conference was held in Wrocław to present the achievements of the RAFF and SUMAD projects co-financed by the Research Fund for Coal and Steel and the Ministry of Education and Science. These projects are concerned with giving post-mining areas a new values, so that they can serve society and the goals of a just transition together with the minimisation of risks and hazards. The conference was attended by researchers and industry representatives from Poland, UK, Czech Republic, Romania, Greece, France, Spain and Germany

Similar bathymetric measurements were carried out on Most Lake in Czechia.

As a part of the RAFF project, scientists from the “Poltegor-Institute” performed a series of bathymetric measurements on Lubstów Lake (Lubstów final pit). The measurements were performed using an Ohmex SonarMite BTX Echo Sounder with a Transducer with accuracy up to 2,5 cm. Based on the obtained results, the reservoirs’ geometry has been modelled and then compared with the original, assumed model.

Geometric changes in slopes and bottoms of post-lignite pit lakes strictly depend on the time of their water coverage. Another observed issue is an influence of waves on slope stability.
